High Court Clears Right to Die Case

26/03/2012

The High Court has ruled that a case regarding a man’s wish to be allowed to die at a time of his choosing should be heard.

Tony Nicklinson has been paralysed by a stroke since 2005 and would be unable to carry out his own suicide. He has to communicate with others using specially adapted equipment. He wishes to obtain a ruling that any doctor that helps him end his life at the time he chooses to do so will not face criminal charges.

The application was opposed by the Ministry of Justice on the ground that it would ‘change murder law’.

However, the Court has ruled that his application can be heard.
